Channel 4′s The Sex Researchers threw up the research of Dr Gordon Gallop of the State University of New York in Albany, who has devised an experiment to prove his theory is that an attractive voice directly correlates to an attractive body.
Students come into the lab and speak the numbers from one to ten into a microphone – this holds what they say constant and keeps it neutral. Records are also kept of the participants’ body shape and how attractive they are and, therefore, how likely they are to be good breeding stock.
Other students then come into the lab and listen to the recordings of the voices and rate the recordings for attractiveness. Females with attractive voices tend to have more hour glass shaped figures, narrow waists and broad hips whilst men with attractive voices tend to have broad shoulders and narrow hips.
So we can choose a good, strong breeding partner from just the sound of their voice, a skill which was vital in the earliest days of our evolution when there was no natural illumination and, once the sun went down, it was totally dark, so our auditory function was key.
Dr Gallup’s dating advice: “A blind date would be a date sight unseen and a deaf date would be a date sound unheard. If you’re considering the prospect of a blind date, the evidence suggests that it might be prudent to have a telephone conversation with that person first or else you could be combining blind and deaf dates and making what could be an important decision in the absence of any relevant information.”
I am reminded of one particular man who managed to charm me via his keyboard but switched off all my romantic feelings once I had his voice over the telephone.
Now that I am past the breeding stage, a man who has a voice with a timbre that can send shivers down my spine is imperative in terms of on-going attractiveness.
