Sex drive
romantic love
deep sense of attachment
Dr Helen Fisher of Rutgers University explains that the feeling of sexual gratification is very different to that mad elation of intense romantic love or the feeling of deep cosmic connection that you have when you feel attachment.
The sex drive evolved to enable you to go out and look at a whole range of partners.
Romantic love was to give you the ability to focus on just once partner
And attachment came about to allow you to tolerate this other person at least long enough to raise a child through infancy.
We may struggle to be sexually monogamous but we are creatures of love. We have a dual reproductive strategy with a tremendous drive to pair up and rear our children as a team and also a tendency towards adultery and divorce.
Justin Garcia of Binghampton University sums it up when he says ‘The feelings of romantic love are intense. No two loves are ever the same, they’re like finger prints. And even though we can study it, we cannot change the magical thing that humans will experiencde.
