9.04am this morning saw the start of the first 24 hours of a relay ride that will see celebrity fund-raisers cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End non-stop over about the next 80 hours.
Today’s sunny start belied the problems ahead which will include tackling an overall hill ascent of almost 29,000ft – the equivalent of Mount Everest… on the first day… and a lot of it in the dark.
Little Britain star, David Walliams (who swam the English Channel for Sport Relief four years ago), is joined in the BT Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride by television and radio presenter, Fearne Cotton, Big Brother host Davina McCall and comedians Miranda Hart, Russell Howard and Patrick Kielty.
A seventh cyclist, comedian Jimmy Carr, will join the team along the way.
They have all been training hard over the last few weeks on special individual-designed bikes to accommodate all the different shapes and sizes of the participants.
Encompassing over 1,000 miles of wind, rain, and rough terrain, the team will make their way from John O’Groats, the northern-most tip of mainland Scotland, down through Inverness, Glasgow, Manchester and Bristol to Lands End, the farthest extreme of mainland England with the aim of reaching their target to raise £1 million for Sport Relief from their epic challenge!
The idea is that each celebrity will take turns on the bicycle while the others cheer them on from the tour bus – their home for four days. It’s going to be a long, tough ride and they really need your help to reach the £1 million target, so please sponsor the team now.
I can’t help but think of saddle sores though, just as I did when I saw this pic over at Hubman’s
