Teenage Parenting - Talking About Sex

Teenage parenting can be such a tricky time so when there are really good days, it feels like such a victory.

We had had a nice day together, shopping and chatting and, back at my flat, somehow the subject came around to pelvic floor exercises.

As you all know, I’m something of an evangelist on the subject so, obviously, I asked her straight out whether she did them regularly.

She laughed and confirmed that she did them daily. One of the things that I am most proud of in our relationship is that she feels she can talk about sex and sexuality quite specifically with me, without embarrassment.

It is a skill that I have honed over the years, since our first tentative beginnings with a starter question on homosexuality and, later, condoms whilst she was still in primary school. Both topics were brought up by her but, instead of brushing her off, I tried really hard to pitch my answer at a level which would make sense and foster complete honesty and openness for the future. I never wanted her to be too frightened or embarrassed to ask me anything.

As a result, a decade on from those small beginnings, we are incredibly relaxed about the subject so I felt able to tell her that I regularly reviewed different Kegel devices.

For the first time ever, she said she felt a bit uncomfortable talking so freely about ‘my‘ sex life – as in her mother. It just didn’t seem quite right.

But, as I pointed out to her, sex is not dirty. And we are not talking about sex per se, we are talking about an important facet of every woman’s life.

If any woman is not getting regular man action, then she needs to take care of the equipment because it will start to malfunction.

I explained that it’s a bit like getting your car serviced regularly. You need to do it less frequently when the car is new but, as it gets older, it requires more TLC.

As you get older, in the absence of penetrative intercourse with a penis, you should masturbate and/or use a Kegel exerciser to keep everything in good working order. And masturbation should be considered just as normal for women as it is for men.

I’m not quite sure how I ended up volunteering the information that I also reviewed sex toys from time to time, but she knows that I am a professional writer so she took it in her stride. However, when she admitted that she was intrigued by the Rampant Rabbit, I just couldn’t resist it.

And that’s how I found myself standing in my hallway demonstrating the man-like action of my blue Deluxe Thruster as we giggled conspiratorially.

I think I may be rewriting the teenage parenting handbook here.

  • I’ve been thinking about a teenage parenting handbook too and I talked about this with another writer he also wanted to join in. Perhaps we should all collaborate with our experiences. I have some great stories!
