I would hope that everyone knows they should slip a condom over a toy that has been or is going to be used for communal play and to clean the equipment afterwards to get rid of any spermicidal residue. It is also important to clean implements that have been in the anus before inserting them into the vagina if you want to avoid a nasty case of thrush or other bacterial infection.
However, making sure that your sex toys are clean after each use is still important, even if you’re the only one using the devices. It is so easy to upset the delicate ph balance of the vagina and adding in any bacteria which may have bred on the remains of the last session’s lube is not going to do your vajayjay any good at all.
This is particularly important with toys made of jelly as they are porous which allows any bacteria to penetrate the surface – if jelly toys are used by other people, they should always be covered with a condom but if you are prone to thrush or urinary tract infections, this course of action is also recommended for when you are flying solo. Silicone, on the other hand, is non-porous and so any germs stay on the outside, where they are easily removed with hot water or a proprietary sex toy cleaner, which makes it the material of choice for those of us regularly doing battle with rogue microbes.
I first bought a packet of Buzz Fresh Wipes when I returned my first discombobulated rabbit to my local Ann Summers. It seemed like a good idea to have a dedicated sex toy cleaner and to be able to hygienically clean my new best friend, without fear of getting water into the battery compartment.
That must have been seven years ago now and they are now fresh scented with camomile extract which is so gentle you can even use it on your own skin for a quick once over.
Maybe if I’d had some Buzz Fresh wipes at Ruf’s house, I wouldn’t have been soaping up my favourite glass dildo over the bathroom sink where, to my dismay, it slipped out of my hands and hit Ruf’s enamel with a thud before promptly breaking in half. With the wipes, I would have been sitting on the bed and any such mishap would have resulted in a far softer landing on the duvet.
These are also great to stick in your suitcase for a weekend away. You can clean everything up easily without wondering whether the soaps provided by the hotel are anti-bacterial.
I think my only complaint is that they could be a little larger to fully envelop some of the larger shafts of the Rampant Rabbits – with a bit left over for the ears. I have always felt that it was not a good idea to wipe one component and then another with the same wipe and, being a thrifty sex blogger, have always turned them over to use the other side. However, if I’ve been particularly extravagant with the lube, it can take more than a one wipe to achieve a level of cleanliness that meets my discerning standards.

Ahhh…..
I’m particularly susceptible to thrush and I thought I was being ultra-paranoid by condoming my ‘friend’ before use. It was my lazy way of dealing with the whole anti-bacterial/cleanliness issue.
So, I’m not being silly after all.

New to the whole sex toy scene, I appreciate all your helpful knowledge and advice. Thanks, Joanna!

Roses, it’s the only way to go to be sure. If you get a lot of thrush, you might also want to look at your diet. I found that avoiding yeast-based products and fungus made a big difference. Candida is a much under-rated problem x
DDD, you’re welcome. I’ve not been playing for that long myself – not using my first toys until about six years ago… but I’ve been trying to make up for lost time ;P
I really enjoyed reading your review Joanna, although as an avid user of various toys I prefer to use anti-bacterial gel which I buy for 99p a bottle making it much less expensive and less obvious in my handbag when I’m out. Buzz Fresh are a great idea although I think Ann Summers should give them out free with their vibrators as there is such a mark up on them anyway when you see how much they can afford to reduce them by in a sale. :-)

Sounds good to me, Dawn :) And I’d not thought of the anti-bacterial gel!
