After my post about vaginal cosmetic surgery, I felt it was important to share this vulva gallery showing the huge range of normal labia.
I was watching Channel 4′s Embarrassing Illnesses and they had a piece about a woman who had undergone such surgery because she felt her labia were too large and she was suffering discomfort from chafing.
The result left her with tiny flaps of skin as her labia, interfering with the funnelling of her urine and causing her to spray when she peed. But worse, the resulting scarring caused pain and problems with sensation when she had sex.
During a corrective operation, her new surgeon managed to reconstruct a proper labial area from her existing skin to recreate the original funnel and stop the irritation from the scars.
At the end of the programme, she reiterated her wish that she had never had the original vaginal cosmetic surgery.
We all have normal labia and it’s only the media who try to persuade us otherwise.
So, it is with pleasure that I also draw your attention to The Labia Project, a book which is currently in production and will be released Summer 2011, with half of all proceeds being donated to a Non-Governmental Organization that is working to help eradicate Female Genital Mutilation in African villages through education.

I did have a normal one until the birth of my child, I was restitched due to a split, and that went wrong and now I only have one side left as the other side was removed by surgery. It doesn’t cause me any discomfort now and it doesn’t bother me, just makes me different!
Hey Michelle, thanks for sharing and putting the other side of the story that essential surgery in that area can result in a good outcome. And, absolutely, you too have normal labia x
I know I have told you my opinion on labia before.
You do well here. Women should know, they are fine with normal. In fact, I think it might not be nearly as good if all were uniform.
Let’s celebrate the differences while we enjoy the simiarities :-)
