In the autumn of 1984, I would get home from work in time to watch The Tube with Paula Yates and Jools Holland. On one memorable occasion, they were showing a ‘special’.
A group called U2 were playing a concert at somewhere called Red Rock. At first, I just listened, busying myself with getting tea ready but, after a while, the music drew me in and I found myself lying on the floor on my belly, elbows on the carpet with my palms supporting my chin as I stared open-mouthed at the lead singer whose slight frame was able to produce some incredible vocals, accompanied by the most haunting guitar work I had heard since Brian May.
I was quickly hooked and fell in love with two of their singles. ‘New Year’s Day’ and ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’. Soon after, the Band Aid single made Bono a media personality and their amazing performance at Live Aid in the Summer of ’85 turned the man with the mullet and the hat into a household name.
I watched their meteoric rise with interest and enjoyed everything they issued. There was never a disappointment as their music started to move into ever more different areas of production. Even now, 27 years on, if it has U2 on the label, you can be pretty sure it’s going to be something worth listening to.
My favourite song has always been Bullet The Blue Sky…

I cna’t say I agree, of late – I think they’ve got complacent. Not enough to write about anymore? I dunno. But I bough the last album and it was fairly meh.
The oldies still give me chills though, all of the Joshua Tree, esp With or Without You and Achtung Baby.

Jo, I must admit, I haven’t bought any albums for years, I just download the singles that I like…
I first remember hearing ‘Pride’ being belted out in the early 80s. ‘With or Without You’ got me well and truly hooked. Though I still prefer their early stuff, my favourite is still ‘Staring at the Sun’.
‘Beautiful Day’, still perks me up, no matter how down I feel.

Hello Joanna, I am a bit late for new year’s wishes: A Good New Year to you!
Hey Roses, I am so with you on Pride and With or Without You, still give me shivers :)
Hey Mago! Never too late and all good wishes gratefully received and returned xx
They have provided the soundtrack to a large portion of my life.
I loved Sunday Bloody Sunday, and it doesn’t get any better than the Joshua Tree album.
Happy New Year :-)
I loved SBS too – it was the highlight of Live Aid!
