MCW - Movies That Remind You Of An Ex

"MovieClip Wednesday"Anonymous Boxer is still taking a break so I shall continue to hold the fort for Movie Clip Wednesday. You’re welcome to play along. Just put ‘I’m Up’ in the comments box and we’ll come and check your selection out.

I was reminded of this film and this memory some weeks ago.

I don’t quite know what he was thinking, perhaps he hadn’t read the reviews. I certainly hadn’t and I can’t remember if he chose the movie or if it was one that we selected together because it was THE movie to see at that time.

My Sugar Daddy was a friend of my father’s, twice my age and with more than a passing resemblance to William Shatner. Captain Kirk, my first crush.

I was 18. Sweet and innocent to the casual observer but with a smutty mouth and a flirtatious manner that did not leave me short of admirers. I also possessed a fabulous arse – although I hated its soft, full roundness back then. I wanted one of those flat, boyish butts.

He used to hold my hand under the Evening Standard newspaper as we all went back home from work on the train. Every night my father and his friends would all met in the pub by the station and have a few pints after work. That’s how it started.

And then he called me at work out of the blue – I have no idea how he got my number – and asked me to meet him for lunch. We started to meet once a week at a club in Soho. There was never any food, just alcohol which made it much harder for me to work in the afternoon. We met occasionally after work too – in another pub away from the others.

One night he asked if he could put his hand on my breast. I was young, ingenuous and almost virginal. I could feel the heat of his hand through the soft cotton fabric of my frock. It felt nice… it was as if we were on the brink. He of betraying his 25 year marriage and me… discovering sex at the hands of an experienced man.

Then, he suggested the movie. I think it was a precursor to something more but his selection of The Deer Hunter rather put paid to any romantic dalliance afterwards. There was a ‘comfort break’ half-way through. It was the longest film I have ever watched and, in those days, there was usually a short film and then the main attraction. The Deer Hunter was too long for that so they ran half the film and then had a break in the middle for the toilets… and for the traumatised viewers to collect themselves and their emotions.

By the end of the movie, I felt shell-shocked and emotionally battered.

We went home on the train.

It was the beginning of the end.

With thanks to everyone who suggested a theme.

“more than a passing resemblance to William Shatner. Captain Kirk, my first crush.” That explains the Star Trek obsession. I really liked your story and would not have thought in a million years that it would lead to The Deer Hunter. For an experienced guy, your ex knew squat about women and movies. That said, The Deer Hunter is an intense movie. And I’m a big Christopher Walken fan. Even though DeNiro gets a lot of credit for the success of this movire, this was Walken’s movie.

I’ll be up later today and around tonight to see everyone.

    Happy MCW!

    Thanks Buzz :)

And Absolutely! Mention The Deerhunter and it’s Walken I remember. I’d forgotten that DeNiro and Meryl were even in it!

Way to kill the joy! Perhaps it was for the best, though. Oh, and here’s to growing up to appreciate one’s full bum.

  • Goodnight Joanna,

You have to wonder why he would choose that movie. Just the title is enough to put a bad mood on a date.

I have to say, I’m glad you don’t have a boyish butt. It’s more like a work of art.

My apologies for being so late. I’m up and getting close.

Moi, I occasionally see him these days – he is still Shatneresque. He even aged the same way… just without the surgery.

Karl, it may even have been me who insisted that was what I wanted to see – it was 30 years ago, I can’t remember :) But I love your appreciation of my derriere!
