MRM has stipulated ‘Worst Remake’ for this week’s theme.
Now I know technically, it’s not really a remake… but I suspect that Michael Mann’s film version of his Eighties series ‘Miami Vice’ which transported Crocket and Tubbs into the 21st century would have had a makeover if it had not produced such disastrous results.
How could he have hoped to replicate the magic of a series that, in its time, was unique for marrying a popular music soundtrack with hard hitting storylines and stepped so close to the line of acceptability – not least because of the large number of men in linen suits and pink shirts?
I felt no affection for the new incarnations, a couple of pseudo-chic smartly dressed scruffs who spoke so fast that I needed sub-titles to understand what was going on. There was just no chemistry and no atmosphere. May be cause there have been so many pale imitations that we’ve just seen it all before.
I’m afraid that Ruf and I turned it off after 20 minutes… and not to go to bed! We decided that we would rather work than waste any more time watching this rubbish.

Without a doubt Bewitched. They took a fabulous cast and then they added Will Ferrell who proceeded to make the biggest balls-up in history. Instead of a tribute to the series, it was an awful ode to Will. I haven’t always hated Ferrell, but I loathed the way he destroyed this.
I had a feeling that MV wouldn’t go to the big screen well. One of my upcoming themes is going to be just this, worst adaptation of a TV show to the big screen.
Strange idea to make a series into a full movie … how does this work? Ach, Crocket and Tubbs, pink flamingoes and cocaine, the definite victory of wrapping over content, hail to the eighties. Thank you for this, I had no idea!
Loved, loved, LOVED the television show. The movie, not so much, although any movie featuring Miami is groovy. And of course, Colin Farrell can arrest me anytime he wants.
You know, I never got into the series or the movie. It always seemed to me like an 80s fashion show. So I’ll take your word that the remake was bad.
Happy MCW!
I’m so late, but I love your pick and agree 100%. I loved the series. It was bright and flashy and while it seems dated now… it sure was fun to watch. Happy belated MCW.
