Movie Clip Wednesday - Films That Didn't Get An Oscar

MRM chose a more difficult topic for this week’s theme.

Unable to think of any off the top of my head, I am indebted to the Daily Mail for providing me with this list of the top ten films that should have won an Oscar.

Reading through, I am totally astonished by some of those listed as these are some of my favourite films of all time.

1. The Shawshank Redemption

2. The Sixth Sense

3. Fight Club

4. Blade Runner

5. It’s a Wonderful Life

5. The Great Escape

7. Taxi Driver

7. Psycho

9. Singin’ in the Rain

10. Dr Strangelove

And they haven’t included Jaws, ET or The Empire Strikes Back.

It’s too hard to choose between the first two, which are both chilling and uplifting at the same time.

  • Good evening Joanna,

I haven’t seen Shawshank Redemption, and I can’t say why I haven’t. It may have come out when I was traveling a lot never got around to it.

I think the Sixth Sense, is one of the best films Bruce Willis has ever done.

Some of my favorite flic’s are on that list, the second 5, 9 and 10 are great.

Hope you had a great clip day!

  • Shawshank is a fantastic movie. It’s a “good” prison movie along with The Green Mile. Psycho is definitely a favorite of mine.

By Oscar I assume you mean best picture as some of those listed got oscars in acting and the technical categories.

Goodfellas. – lost to Dances with Wolves.
Star Wars – lost to Annie Hall
Apocalypse Now – lost to Kramer vs Kramer
The Elephant Man & Raging Bull both lost to Ordinary People (never heard of it!)
Raiders of The Lost Ark & On Golden Pond both lost to Chariots of Fire
E.T, Tootsie and The Verdict all lost to Gandhi. Blade Runner not even nominated 1982 was a very good year for film!

Fatal Attraction, Cry Freedom and Moonstruck all lost to one of the most overated films of all time The Last Emperor
Pulp Fiction and Shawshank both lost to Forrest Gump.
Everything that lost to the Titanic
Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespere in Love
LOTR – The Two Towers (best of the 3) lost to Chicago. (shudder!)
Some like it hot (best comedy ever?) lost out to Ben Hur (best pompus film ever)
Singing in the Rain & The Quiet Man lost to The Greatest Show on Earth

    I demand a recount!

Excellent list, Brian. There certainly have been some travesties! I guess it’s like every arena in which you get voted for by other submitters. There are always going to be some strange results whether from political voting or just because of the varying degree of standards in ‘what people like’

I have observed that Oscar voting can tend to be very emotional (as well as political)
e.g Judi Dench got a best supporting actress award for 8 mins of screen time for Shakespere in Love. Bc the academy felt guilty over not giving her the oscar she deserved for Mrs Brown the year before.
Martin Scorsese finally got his oscar for the so-so The Departed when he should have gotten it for Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Gangs Of New York…
Lord of the Rings – Return of the King got EVERYTHING! But I thought it was the weakest of the trilogy. I think the academy were holding back the goods to reward the whole trilogy.
Paul Newman got his Oscar for the so-so The Color Of Money. Again making up for any number of films he should have got it for. The Verdict and The Sting spring to mind.

  • jaw was one of the most terrible movie I have watched. If i have time i will watch it again.

  • To tell the truth, I’am speechless. The Shawshank Redemption is phenomenal. I’am not too old film fanatic, in fact, this film come out whenI was very young, and consequently I am to a greater extent used to films with fabulous special effects, edge-of-your-seat action, et cetera. This film has none of that, and even, it appeals me very much . Way Frank Darabont uses the story of Red to drive on the story, the excellent the soundtrack used (note the harmonica used just earlier Red getting the letter at the end). The entire film, from start to closing, from actions to music, is a beacon of desire, judgment, and repurchase. The cast is pure, Morgan Freeman(Red) actually brings about a fresh feel to the tale, and that’s exactly what the movie is, what a film should be. Really recommended for each film fan.
