When I told Ruf the theme that Boxer had chosen for this week’s MCW, he immediately suggested the drinking scene from Goodfellas which precedes them going off to cut up a corpse.
However, for me, this was the first thing that sprang to mind. A scene that haunted my childhood. Nancy wants to get the orphan, Oliver Twist, away from the clutches of her lover, evil Bill Sykes (played by the fabulous Oliver Reed), who is using him to help with his robberies.
Using this catchy drinking song as a cover, Nancy spirits Oliver out of the pub so that she can return him to the elderly gentleman who is actually his grandfather and with whom she has arranged a meeting on the bridge. Unfortunately, Bullseye The Dog gives the game away and Bill spots her.
The cheerful energy of this scene is swiftly replaced by the chilling horror of what happens next…

Oliver is a great movie! I was a toddler when my parents took me to see this, but it made a huge impression on me nonetheless. I think Mark Lester was my first ever little girl crush :o).
I found Mark Lester a bit too wet. It was Jack Wild’s Artful Dodger all the way for me!
P.S. Bull Terrier dawg! My favorite kind.
Haha, I knew I’d get the dog vote :)
I always found that scene with Nancy very powerful as she tries to help Oliver and Bill Sykes kills her for it. Lovely uplifting film on the whole – but only half the story that Dickens actually wrote for Oliver Twist.
Yup, I read the book as a grown up and was astonished to find how much more there is to this story
Wild stuff. Nice choice!
You commented on my post before I’d finished it. Come on back and BRING RUF for sure!
Mr Troll, you are a mean, sadistic man! ;P
I have to confess, I’ve never seen this movie, but Mr. Boxer has it on his list of favorites so I think it’s time to watch. This is why I enjoy MCW…. I see so many great movies to watch. Very cool pick.
(I almost went with Goodfellas, too!)
If you’re not singing along by the end, I shall be astonished!
Ay, Caramba. Trouble in gin lane. I did not see this film yet. Oliver Reed? Oh …
Good afternoon Joanna,
I would not have thought of Oliver. If fits the category well, good thinking.
Happy Clip Day
Inspired selection!
Well, for all of your computer problems today, you made a good choice. Another childhood classic that I haven’t thought about in quite a while. And Shani Wallis (Nancy) was pretty hot – in a Julie Andrews kind of way. Please sir, I want some more. I wanted to smack that kid.
Happy MCW!
