I missed out last week because I didn’t realise that MRM had taken on the hosting duties for Movie Clip Wednesday.
However, I couldn’t let Best War Movie go by without mentioning The Great Escape and The Dam Busters.
This week’s theme is Best Sequel.
Well, there’s the fabulous ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ with the wonderful Han Solo response when Leia tells him that she loves him. Or ‘The Two Towers’ from Lord of the Rings where things really start happening. And of course here is Khaaaaaaan! from the second Star Trek movie. Or Arnie as a good Terminator.
But, right now, despite all the terrible reviews, it has to be Sex And The City 2.
Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the movie and have managed to avoid any of the reviews.
Mark Kermode made me shriek with laughter at his grilling of the film. And a lot of what he says is right. Where else would you find a couple who could retain a second apartment without letting it out, or a family who could just allow the main breadwinner to quit their job for reasons of equality without batting an eyelid? SATC2 is a fantasy world.
But, you know what, I love living there and it gave me an opportunity to spend the most fabulous evening with my teenage daughter. No fighting, no recriminations, just dinner, a movie and shared observations about relationships over a glass of wine.
Priceless!
This is the article by Lindy West to which Mark Kermode refers right at the end.
Fabulous :)

Good afternoon Joanna,
Good choices with the Great Escape and Dam Busters. I couldn't say about Sex in the City, I've never seen the show or the first movie and tell you the truth I'm not likely to. Although I have to say the premise of four unescorted women planning a vacation to a Muslim nation seems a little farfetched.
It's good that you and your daughter had a good time seeing it.
For me the good thing about Sex In The City is that I just don't get it. It's good to know that my inner bloke is still there somewhere, sitting in his singlet with a milk bottle on the table.
Good you and your daughter had a good night out on it.
I like this – 2 for 1 MCW. I'm there with your choices for war pictures. Dam Busters is one I haven't seen in a really long time. Sex in the City – meh. The Mrs liked the 1st one and the series and I'm sure she'll see the 2nd one with some of her girl friends, but not me.
Happy MCW!
JC, The Great Escape is a good choice. Princess chose Dam Busters as well. I may have to watch it some time. Have never watched a single episode of SITC. I didn't have HBO back then. Still don't. Tried watching it on cable but there is not way it is as good. You can go with a different scene for next week. Just like pushing the “EASY” button at Staples. Or with my ex-wife. Whichever.
Karl, I think it’s more of a woman’s film but the relationship stuff is so informative that men can learn an awful lot from it too ;)
Im not sure I wanted that image in my head ;P As I said to Karl, the relationship issues are valuable for both sexes
The cinema actually had a lot more men than I expected :) I should also have mentioned the film about Douglas Bader and the Battle of Britain – where he loses his legs but I cant remember the title!
I have another idea for next week now so it’s ok :) The Dam Busters is a stonking good film. I grew up with the war movies and I have so many favourites, it was really hard to choose even just two! The Great Escape is always being shown on tv though so that’s the one that sticks in the memory most.
