So Heff went and chose Lobster for this month’s Culinary Showdown.
Well, I hunted and I hunted! I just couldn’t find any vegan faux lobster locally but then, as I scoured the internet, I eventually came across these two strange ladies. Unfortunately, not in sufficient time to be able to cook the recipe myself.
Vegan Mock Lobster
Made from carrots, red lentils, rice and garlic
Once I knew what to search for, Mock Lobster and Mock Lobster Recipe threw up all manner of variants but, invariably, the ‘mock’ part involved fish which, of course is not vegan.
So I will have to settle for the two weird ladies and hope you all enjoy.
They’re funny. Especially the, “looks like a giant fucking hamburger” admission! I came across some Finnish lobster recipes that looked cool to me too. Not vegan, though.

Mock Lobster sounds like a B52 song. Thanks for having a vegetarian option. I eat seafood, but I won’t/can’t eat lobster or crab. Too cute.
They actually have ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B52s playing in the background if you listen carefully :)

We call Monk Fish, fake/mock lobster, here. Yes, it’s fish and a horribly ugly one at that. Could you make “mock lobster” out of tofu? That’s vegan, isn’t it?
Actually, I’d not thought of that! You do get minced tofu. I guess if I made it more solid with rice…?
You just can’t make a mock lobster…lobster is lobster!

Thanks Karl. I shall pass on your good wishes to Ruf as he’s not with me this weekend. I’ve seen no ash but it was misty here this morning, judging by all the foghorns I could hear on the river. I have heard of people marooned in Europe because our airports are all closed.
