MCW: Most OverRated Oscar Winner

Boxer has selected Most OverRated Oscar Winner as this week’s theme and really I don’t think there is any competition on this one – which is why I am quite sure there will be lots of blog jinxes.

I don’t think it helped that the hype of the previous months were followed by some reviewer on the radio telling me the ending but, when I finally came to see the film on dvd, it really was such an anticlimax.

I love Ralph Feinnes and Willem Defoe, I think Juliette Binoche and Kristin Scott Thomas are dead sexy too but the film was too long and far too sandy.

  • I thought there was a lot to like in the film, but it did ramble on a bit so maybe not worth an Oscar.

I’ve said it before; my cinematic bête noir is ‘Close Encounters…’ it is so pompous, overblown and pretentious. Widely tipped to take ‘Best Picture’ it ended up not even nominated in that category which was seen by some as a snub, but did pick up *Best Cinematography’

FC – To be honest, it was a tough call because I have enjoyed all the Best Pictures. The English Patient got the nod for this because of the rambling and the fact that you didnt really care about the main characters played by KST and Ralph. It was Juliette Binoche who carried the picture.

As it happens, I really enjoy Close Encounters – especially the mashed potato mountain :)

Yeah, this movie was way too long but I did like the cinematography and I’m a sucker for period pieces. Kristin Scott Thomas has some good naked scenes but Ralph Feinnes always creeps me out.

    Happy MCW!

  • Didn’t see it. The “Seinfeld” episode about it was pretty funny though.

  • Amen, J. I have never been able to make it all the way through this movie. I’m not sure why. I’ve said this before but my evil ex-sister law LOVED it so that’s probably the main reason. Good pick and thanks for playing. The theme for next week is “Best Political Thriller” and I promise I won’t change. :-)

The book was better–I jes’ doan like KST much….but the movie version of English Patient really did not live up to the book.

    Happy MCW, Cakey-Pie!!

Buzz – But that’s the whole thing about Ralph – he has a certain extra something that sets him apart from the rest. An air of danger
