Anonymous Boxer has decreed that this week’s theme should be Best Movie set in England, Ireland or Scotland.
Being a staunch Welsh supporter, I have to insist that the Principality be included in this geographic celluloid segment!
Not that I can think of many famous Welsh movies… but that’s not the point! Why should our Gaelic cousins get all the glory when Welsh history is just as turbulent?
Apparently The Lion in Winter was filmed there and also that one about The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill but Came Down A Mountain or some such.
So I am reduced to returning North to Scotland. Gregory’s Girl, I’ve mentioned before and Braveheart and Rob Roy. But there’s also The Queen and The Young Victoria, The King’s Speech – all featuring the Royal Residence at Balmoral – and, naturally, Mary, Queen of Scots.
Searching through a list of Films Made In Scotland, I was reminded of The Master of Ballantrae, The Thirty Nine Steps and a film that made a big impact in my childhood, Ring of Bright Water.

I’ve not seen that one.
Thanks for browbeating Boxer into including Wales!
Happy MCW!
Hey xl! Browbeat Boxer? Me? I just gently suggested and nudged her in the right direction ;P Sadly, after all that, I couldn’t find a film that fitted for Wales so had to go with Scotland, but it is an interesting film :)
This is kind of like the Scottish version of Flipper – that I’ve never seen.
Happy MCW!
Wales? Well if you can extend the scope to include TV shows as well as movies, there is always Patrick McGoohan’s 1960′s classic “The Prisoner.” Exterior scenes in The Village were all filmed in Portmeirion.
