You can still play along with Movie Clip Wednesday whilst Anonymous Boxer is away. Just put ‘I’m Up’ in the comments box and we’ll come over and check your selection.
This week’s suggestion was Best Flood Scene and I was instantly taken back to one specific moment.
Whilst Titanic did deck flooding and capsizing a little more stylishly and the special effects may have been far more special, the gritty reality of the original version of The Poseidon Adventure made such an impression on my childish psyche that I still remember it 35 years on.
And, in particular, Shelly Winters diving in to find a way through the underwater corridors to oxygen-filled safety. Sadly, I couldn’t find the actual clip but here’s a trailer.

Hello Joanna, I put up something foggy.
The clip of them swimming under water from one compartment to another was what I was looking for too. Good thing I didn’t find it. Irwin Allen was to epic disasters as Cecil B. DeMille was to Epic religious movies. He did other stuff like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Lost in Space, but this is the movie I remember. I still remember seeing this movie in the theater and I also had the MAD Magazine issue where they spoofed this movie.
I’m up at the Buzzkill with some very sudden and painful flooding.
I’ll be around tonight to visit everyone.
Happy MCW!
Hi Joanna…
I called earlier today and after commenting realised that it was on yesterdays post so I’m back now. The clip with Miss Winters that you are looking for is showing at the Palais.
Along with quite a lot of water!
Happy MCW. And again thanks for hosting…
Good afternoon Joanna,
The Poseidon Adventure was very well done for its time. I think it’s a better choice than Titanic.
I’m up with flooding of Biblical proportion.

Ooh, Karl, I was trying to think of some biblical flood movies :)

this wouldve been my choice too -or maybe the one where the guy kidnaps women and puts them in a container to drown them? forget it -pretty good and scary. happy MCW> and wow- when gene hackman was young – theres got to be a new tomorrow.

It’s still Wednesday for another hour and three minutes in the Pacific Northwest so…
Not to quibble (especially since I admired Shelly Winters’ performance in Poseidon Adventure) but do capsizing boats really count as flooding?
The answer might be yes, but even if sinking boats count then I’d put in a pitch for the epic land flood in Oh Brother Where Art Thou.

Nice call, Aunty… and I love the young Mel. Such a shame things went so awry with him
Yup, K9, I never appreciated the qualities of Gene Hackman when I was younger – I went for a different type of man. However, older and wiser and with the education of my Ruf… I’d have done him :)
LOL @Figleaf, I think the people on that boat felt pretty flooded :P
Fortunately, Buzzkill did include the clip from Oh Brother… and I definitely agree with that selection :)
