I spent the weekend with Ruf and we watched Dumbo with a young member of his family so, when the Milk River Madman suggested Favourite Disney Movie, I knew exactly which one I would select. However, then I noted the rider – non-animated. I had to stop and think if I could actually remember any.
Obviously, I could have gone with Pirates of the Caribbean because it was a great film but I suspect that some of my fellow Johnny devotees will make it almost a clean sweep for that film.
Of the rest, I was never much of a fan of Bedknobs and Broomsticks, but I did enjoy The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, so the final choice was something of a toss-up – especially as my previous mention of this particular film was not particularly flattering. However, overall, Mary Poppins wins by a mile for watchability.
Enjoy my favourite disney movie – non-animated.

I saw this as a kid in the cinema and our kids enjoyed it on video. We even had the soundtrack album of the songs at the time! Thus I know all the songs by heart. I seem to remember that the optical effect of the the characters walking up a staircase of chimney smoke was quite revolutionary at the time, although it appears crude to us now.
Don’t you just love Dick van Dyke’s awful attempt at a cockney accent!

Some bits of it are better than others and Dick Van Dyke is so bad, he’s good. He has become the standard for Americans impersonating Cock-er-neys :) I preferred him in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Damn! Was that a Disney Movie? Cos that was far better than Mary Poppins!
This really has nothing to do with your blog post – but your comment reply got me thinking about something. It seems to me that British and Aussie actors always seem to be able to do a better job of pulling off authentic Yank accents, but the converse is rarely true.
I wonder why this is?

Hi Joanna,
I still enjoy watching this movie with the nieces and nephews when they come over for a visit even if DVD’s accent is laughable. The aussie accent is a little like the cockney and a combination of many of the broader English,Scot,Welsh, and Irish….Given Our history it is to be expected. Both accents do seem difficult for American Actors to master though…And i’m buggered if I know why…
Oh…And I’ve had my first Blog Jinx with the Host! Congratulate me….XXX
Hey Muffin and Princess, I know that when Aussies come over here, we notice that the way they enunciate their vowels is very similar to those of us in the South of England – path as if it had an r in it, etc. I wonder if it’s actually more to do with phonetics. I seem to recall Sean Bean (who’s from Sheffield) not doing a terribly good Yank accent. Perhaps if we asked the US actors to speak with Northern English accents rather than Southern, they might have more success? Mind you, I think Rene Zellweiger managed to pull off Bridget Jones pretty well.
This was my choice too!
I think I can strike a deal, we will apologize for Dick Van Dyke’s accent in Mary Poppins in exchange for Liam Neeson never attempting an American accent again =)

Which film with Liam Neeson???
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was brought out as a sort of answer to Mary Poppins, although some 4 years later. It was produced by Albert R. (Cubby) Broccoli, he of the earlier James Bond films. Not really surprising considering that the original book was written by Ian Fleming. It was adapted for screen by Roald Dahl.

Good evening Joanna,
What a fine choice! Mary Poppins is a such a fun film. The rooftop scene is still one of my favorite dance scenes. And on occasion when pissed and flustered with the world, I find flying a kite is not such a bad thing to do.
Hope you enjoyed your clip day!

Great choice and you (as a Britt) must find Dick van Dykes accent as funny as we Yanks do. Watching that clip I just realized that he was the first to cultivate the pants hanging at the hips look. Revolutionary.
Happy MCW!
FC – Ah, I had forgotten the James Bond connection! Thanks for the info x
Karl – I always remember the Child Catcher and the puppet scene. When I am corrected at my tai chi class, I feel just like Dick Van Dyke as a pretend puppet :)
Buzz – LMAO! Have you seen the latest trouser travesty? They are now designed deliberately baggy around the crotch and thighs. It looks like they’ve dumped in their nappy :)
