Dr Whipple and the G Spot

“…two-thirds of women need more specific clitoral stimulation by hand or by stimulation of the exterior body, rather than penetration. Even though they like penetration, most women don’t find it easy to orgasm that way.”
Shere Hite 1976

The experiments of Beverley Whipple, a gynaecological nurse, claimed to have found a pleasure centre inside the vagina. Her medical team examined 400 women and discovered this spot in all the women. If you put two fingers into the vagina and use a come-hither beckoning motion, the area that surrounds the urethra (the pee tube and hole) swells and they reported that it felt nice.

She named it the G Spot after German physician, Dr Ernst Grafenburg, who advocated sex like a cow and warned that this phenomenon should not be explained away by the balls knocking against the clitoris. He also believed that orgasm was not achieved through clitoral stimulation alone.

However, no one else could locate the G Spot or work out how it might work. It was not until the late eighties that further research concentrated on the clitoris itself and discovered that, despite external appearances, the little bean was actually more like an iceberg with two fingers that extended out close to the front wall of the vagina making it more like a wish bone than a bean. It gave an anatomical explanation for the G Spot because it highlighted Dr Whipple’s findings about the swelling of the area around the urethra. Suddenly, there was proof that the clitoral tissue was in this area too.

In 2009, Dr Andrea Burri surveyed 18,000 women and still failed to locate the G Spot so there is still disagreement but this is all part of the nature of sexuality itself. When you consider that some women come just from having their nipples touched and others can even think themselves to orgasm, it’s not surprising that there is disagreement over something which attempts to provide uniformity.

For myself, I love clitoral stimulation and can come quite easily from that practice. However, in the run up to such an orgasm, I often feel the need for penetration, a strong and compulsive urge that has me reaching for whatever is to hand just to capture the intense stimulation of entry.
