Over 80% of British plastic surgeons have had to put right botched cosmetic surgery operations that have been performed abroad.
In an attempt to get things done cheaper, British men and women go to other countries. One such woman was featured in Channel 4′s Embarrassing Bodies. After having her two children, Lindsay’s breasts had become ‘saggy’ and she had taken advantage of a £2500 offer that included a week in a five star hotel in Tunisia with the operation at the end of her stay.
She knew that something had gone very wrong from the appearance of her nipples through the bandages when she came round from the operation. On returning home, her breasts healed but she was badly scarred. Whilst her boobs were symmetrical, the nipples were now situated half way up each one rather than pertly pointing at the end. The silicone implants had not been fixed in place correctly and were too big for her. As a result, they were not only making her misshapen and lumpy, but dragging the rest of the breast downwards causing her nipples to point up to the ceiling. This meant that they showed above the line of her bra rather than nestling within.
The NHS no longer pays to correct foreign cosmetic surgery mistakes unless there is a medical emergency but, for the programme, this lady saw a consultant in Birmingham, who removed the implants, cut away the excess skin around the breasts leaving the nipple in place, and stitched the skin back together so that each breast lay immediately behind its nipple. She had scarring from the nipple to the base of each breast and underneath each breast.
However, six weeks on, those scars are fading and the nipples were looking like nipples again and pointing forwards.
One other interesting thing that Embarrassing Bodies revealed is that breastfeeding is not a major cause of sagging breasts. The more likely culprits are smoking, which breaks down the elastin that supports the tissue and exercising without a properly fitting sports bra. You have been warned!
