MCW: Best Movie On A Train

"MovieClip Wednesday" Here is this week’s Movie Clip Wednesday whilst Anonymous Boxer still has her nose to the grindstone.

Post I’m Up in my comments box and I’ll come have a look at your choice :)

Some weeks ago, the theme was New York New York and that’s when this film first came back into my head. Ruf and I watched the remake with Denzel Washington and John Travolta recently and it was very entertaining but, in a time when we are overwhelmed with movies of madmen taking hostages and doing terrible things to gain ransoms, I don’t think it had quite such an impact as the 1974 original with Walther Matthau and Robert Shaw when things were simpler and such events were few and far between.

The Taking of Pelham 123 – trailers from both versions with 1974 first so that the dramatic difference between film making and special effects is so much more noticeable.

  • Haven’t seen the newer version, but I thought Walter Matthau was great as his lugubrious self in the original.

My pick would be John Frankenheimer’s ‘The Train’ from 1964 Starring Burt Lancaster. See it if you get the chance. Never mind special effects; when they needed to film a German air-raid on a freight yard they actually went and blew up a real freight yard!

Nominations for the worst movie on a train must include the dreadful Beatles movie ‘A Hard Days Night’ and a special condemnation for ‘Quadrophenia’, which coincidentally is being shown on itv4 tonight, where, depite being careful with early 1960′s scooters, cars and general paraphenalia, quite clearly features Underground rolling stock that wasn’t introduced until the 70′s and where at the end Phil Daniels travels ostensibly to Brighton from a late-1970′s PADDINGTON in a train hauled by a diesel locomotive that had not even been built at the time the story is supposed to have taken place. (Hint: London to Brighton trains are mostly electric and at the time ran mostly from Victoria)

  • Goodnight Joanna,

Good choice, I remember the suspense of the movie (first one) was pretty intense. I never saw the second one.

Sorry I couldn’t play today. Had I done so, this would be my clip:

For obvious reasons “Well that ought to do it” Bawhahaha.

Hope you had a fine clip day!

  • Buzz Kill

Well, I made it back – again. I had a comment all typed up yesterday morning and something went wrong, it didn’t post and I was out of time. So here I am – again. I have not seen either version of this movie but I can watch Denzel washington in just about anything so, good choice.

I’m up at the Buzzkill with a train that only lasts a minute.

    Happy MCW!

Now I will truy and remember to copy my comment before posting, just in case.

BuzzK, I agree, Denzel is very watchable for all the right reasons… and not just because he’s a good looking chap!
