Anonymous Boxer has decreed that Best Hitchcock Movies shall be this week’s theme.
Now I’m not a horror movie person. My kids will tell you. I jump and scream when the music changes in Dr Who.
My readers will also know from the renditions of some of my sexual encounters that I have an extremely furtive imagination. This means that, in the depths of the dark night, I can terrify myself far more effectively than any film director. And, if you give me the seeds to germinate such mental imaginings…
As a result, I don’t do horror films… and that includes Hitchcock.
I have never liked material shower curtains because they can get caught around you and I hate the feel of wet vinyl on my skin. Tales and pastiches and comedy impressions of the shower scene from Psycho have done nothing to improve this and I much prefer a glass fronted screen where I can see what’s going on… although I am still always worried that the bathroom door will open to reveal some knife-wielding psychopath.
I can remember at school someone told me about a scene from ‘The Birds’. I never saw the movie or even the clip but, since then, I have been left with a morbid fear of fluttering wings. Birds, bats, butterflies, moths. In the garden, I’m fine with them… but enclose me in a walled room and they’re flapping extremities fill me with a fear that, if left unchecked, could leave me cowering in a corner at the mercy of a wee beastie only an inch big.
Naturally, I take myself in hand and give myself a good talking to… but that doesn’t mean I have to like them so I avoid butterfly houses and aviaries. As to the dusty bodies of big fat moths…? Well I try very hard to shepherd them out of my living space and then ensure that I never have windows open with the lights on.
I have not watched this clip but it purports to be a trailer for ‘The Birds’.
Enjoy… if you like that sort of thing.

Well, you and I are the first of many blogger jinxes for today. Although Psycho is my favorite, The Birds would have to be my 2nd favorite. Just the complexity of shooting all of those scenes with live animals is amazing. I read that Tippi Hedren actually got cut by one of the birds. I’ll bet she still has nightmares.
Happy MCW!
Good evening Joanna,
There’s nothing wrong with avoiding movies you’re not comfortable watching. It’s one of the reasons I miss so many of the modern movies that are full of gratuitous violence and no plot or substance. Although there are likely several Hitchcock films you might find entertaining. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, To Catch a Thief and North by Northwest come to mind.
Hope you’ve enjoyed your clip day.

Who knew THE BIRDS would be the most blog jinxed of all time? And it’s totally OK because it just shows what a great movie this was. I hate violent horror movies, but THE BIRDS was more about what your own mind did to you while watching. Karl has made some great suggestions, North by Northwest is one of my all time favorites. Happy MCW!

When we redid our master bath, I insisted on see through glass, too. When I’m in a hotel room by myself, I close and lock the bathroom door. Yes. That’s what Psycho wrought. Happy Movie Clip Wednesday!
I jinxed you too! I love fluttering crazy things. just call me if you get scared! happy MCW!

Buzz – I dont know how Tippi did it. I would have had to have counselling!
Karl – Mr and Mrs Smith? Wasn’t that where Brangelina started?
The name is very familiar, Boxer. I wonder if I have actually seen that one in the past but forgotten it!
Moi – Im sure you and I came from the same gene pool ;P
Phew, K9, you are my hero :)
Good evening Joanna,
I had to look up Brangelina. No, I don’t think they are related.
