The Milk River Madman has suggested Favourite 50s Movies as this week’s theme.
I looked down the lists of favourites on Google and there were lots there that I love – real staples of my childhood, including Ruf’s favourite 12 Angry Men, White Christmas, Ben Hur, Some Like It Hot, some real classics. Great Westerns and romances, as well as many of my favourite Disneys, like Lady and the Tramp.
But then I saw it – a film that intrigued me with sibling rivalry, romance, violence, pillage, beautiful scenery, a most haunting theme tune played on a long horn, Kirk Douglas – all dimple and only one eye … and the beautiful Tony Curtis having his hand cut off. Yup, for me, my favourite 50s movie has to be The Vikings.
There are three clips in all, the theme music with some stills, and two with selected parts of the movie.

Another good movie in the same genre with Richard Widmark and the always eloquent Sydney Poitier, “The Long Ships”, but this one includes the Mare of Steel – a horrendous way to die.
Good afternoon Joanna,
Good choice, I’ve forgotten about this one. Douglas stared in so many fine movies.
Happy Clip Day!

Actresses in the 40′s and 50′s were waaaaaaaay hotter than the 60-80′s. Something about the hairstyles and body shapes that I find mildly attractive. Kirk Douglas as badass back then. Just a rugged man’s man. Happy MCW
I would have killed for a night with Janet Leigh.

Not my favourite Douglas movie, but agree it was still a great one.
Happy MCW gorgeous!

I always use to confuse the Vikings with the Long Ships. One of my favorite scenes is the oar walking scene.
Madman – Starlets of the 50s weren’t made of silicone.
Happy MCW!
