After last week’s Best 1950s Movie, the Milk River Madman was less than inventive with this week’s Favourite 1940s movie theme but who am I to complain when it allows me to work my way through a wealth of nostalgia.
The ‘Best of’ lists all go with standard faves like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon but I was delighted to see that other people appreciated films that I have mentioned on this blog before – the original Miracle on 34th Street and National Velvet.
However, another 1940s movie that sticks in my memory has to be Black Narcissus with Deborah Kerr and David Farrar, Sabu and Jean Simmonds. This was a film that set my soul alight with the lust for a man that forced a woman to renounce her vows. It was also a film which reinforced a childhood desire to one day wear a nun’s habit, something that had been started by The Sound of Music. There’s just something so evocative about those beautiful faces totally surrounded by the sheer white of the wimple.
Enjoy!

For me it has to be ‘Brief Encounter’ but only because deep down I’m a soppy old romantic deep down and not just because it has trains in it!

…And that was gibberish. Sorry.

LMAO… Overcome by the romance and the trains, FC ;P
This looks interesting with the added allure of – nuns. Kind of a pre-cursor to the Flying Nun and in color no less (pretty rare for the 1940s). And when the credits said that it starred Jean Simmons, I thought – he can’t be that old can he (Gene Simmons – get it?)?
Happy MCW!
As a recovering Catholic, will I go to hell because I’m rooting for the nun to leave? Buzz stole my Jean/Gene Simmons joke.
Happy MCW!
Black Narcissus is an amazingly sophisticated and complex film for its day.

Buzz, Jean Simmonds was as striking as Audrey Hepburn and I had a huge crush on her!
MRM, I know what you mean! Although Im not a Catholic, I still wanted her to strike out for freedom!
MrW, There is also something so masculine about David Farrar. He’s a bit Stewart Grainger-ish but maybe more sophisticated. And such an incredible contrast to the fragility of the nuns.
Goodnight Joanna,
I’ve not seen Black Narcissus but with looks like Jean Simmonds, I bet she could become habit forming.
Are you doing the effect that puts the you two videos together? It’s pretty neat. Could you tell me how to do it?
Happy clip day.

I admit, I am a Casablanca fan too. I know it may seem cliche, but Bogey was fucking cool!
I bet you’d look stunning in the habit.
Karl, I upload the vids from YouTube onto a special playlist on my own YT channel. Click all the clips that you want to share and then copy the embed code provided. Et voila :)
Mac, Bogey was definitely not a looker but he sure had charisma :)
